Catherine E. Shaw
Catherine spent her adolescent years developing her craft in everything from ceramics to painting to welding to stretching canvases to performance art, using various mediums as a conduit for her development. She graduated with an advanced academic diploma with a seal from the Visual and Performing Arts Academy, and when it was time to go to college there was never any question as to what she would be pursuing- studio art.
She attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City for 2 years as a fine arts major, focusing on painting in an effort to hone her skills and obtain classical training as an artist. When student loans maxed out and food supply ran low, she turned to busking in the subways and parks of the city, singing for money on train platforms.
There, she met a music producer, who scooped her up into the studio to record. She ended up leaving school to pursue music, eventually landing a publishing deal with Sony, and in those years, she continued her artmaking practice very much through songwriting, but also through the art direction and conceptualization of music videos, album artwork, and other marketing materials.
When Catherine’s music-making slowed down after starting a family she found herself working on art projects with her children and became interested in finishing her degree- this time for art education. Through her studies at Academy of Art University she not only gained a working knowledge of early childhood education and developmental psychology, she took studio classes that spanned all mediums: digital and physical illustration, animation and video editing, sculpture, photography and painting.
Since obtaining that degree Shaw has been consistently working as an illustrator and graphic designer, using her unique skillset to bring her clients’ visions to life through her playful and concise artwork and design.
